Consultants upgrade to SuSE Linux

Johannesburg, 22 Jun 2001

International consulting engineers and project managers, Bergman-Ing'erop (B-I) have begun a programme of upgrading their IT infrastructure with the purchase of seven new Network Servers, supplied by software solution providers, Saffral Consulting.

Saffral are the southern Africa business partners of SuSE Linux in Germany, widely regarded as the most technologically advanced distribution of the Linux operating system. As such, SuSE Linux powers all machines supplied to B-I. B-I's requirements were for cost effective yet reliable file servers to manage their valuable drawing office and contract administration files, in three of their eight regional offices. A combination file and mail/internet server has been supplied and installed in their Maputo and Nelspruit offices, whilst two files servers, three print servers and a separate mail and Internet server are installed in the head office in Rivonia.

All file servers have the built in security of three mirrored hard drives plus either off site tape or CD back up. Back-up's are handled automatically at a pre-determined time, and successful operation is communicated to the responsible person by e-mail or SMS.

"We examined several options before deciding on the Saffral's SuSE Linux solution. All were considerably more expensive and promised no greater security or reliability than the Linux solution" said B-I's CEO, Alvaro Campos de Carvalho. "We were also impressed by Saffral's track record in supplying and maintaining Linux based server and database solutions to other customers, over the past two years, often in less than ideal operating environments" he said.
