Concerned about network security? Don't forget your mobile workforce

Access Point Name is a technology that addresses the issue of remote mobile security, says Derek Hershaw, CEO at MWEB ISP.

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2013

Most savvy businesses devote a significant portion of their IT budget to ensuring their data network is secure. This usually includes implementing a VPN (virtual private network), enabling employees to access confidential data, e-mail systems and other cloud-type applications from their homes and other remote locations. VPNs are similar to wide area networks (WANs), but incorporate robust encryption and authentication software that enables them to use public networks like the Internet, rather than private long-distance leased lines.

Initially, VPNs were available only on ADSL or MPLS - landline - technology. However, with the increasing number of people accessing the Internet via the cellular network, a solution had to be found to secure this as well.

Enter APN (Access Point Name), a technology that addresses the issue of remote mobile security. According to Derek Hershaw, CEO at MWEB ISP, an APN solution from MWEB Business delivers the high levels of security businesses need when employees access the Internet, or require direct access into the company LAN, via the 3G network.

"This allows them to access corporate network services and applications, including e-mail and cloud services, from virtually anywhere - even overseas, provided they have access to a roaming service - without compromising corporate network security," he says.

"Many businesses also use the APN to ensure that their 3G failover solution also meets their requirement for secure Internet access, should their fixed-line access be interrupted."

How MWEB Business's APN service works: MWEB's robust, secure network infrastructure has direct fibre links into the GSM network. Once your MWEB Business APN connection has been set up, any employee with a designated and configured SIM card can connect to the mobile network in the normal way. Data is then routed across the secure fibre link into the MWEB Business network, rather than across the open cellular network.

MWEB Business offers two types of APN services: a public APN that gives you secure access to the Internet; and a private APN that allows for direct access to the company LAN/WAN.

In addition to its innovative mobile and APN solutions, MWEB Business offers a range of services and solutions to meet all aspects of an organisation's IT needs, from ADSL, fibre and leased line connectivity to cloud-based security, backup, archiving, business application and hosting services.
