Computer Configurations takes on HP NetServer

Johannesburg, 17 May 1999

Computer Configurations, a Computer Configurations Holdings company, has been appointed as a Direct Select value-added reseller (VAR) for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) NetServer range. In terms of the agreement, CC will source its HP hardware directly from Hewlett-Packard Europe, and will provide comprehensive maintenance and support for the servers and their operating systems.

The HP NetServer is among the top three Intel-based servers on the market.

"Computer Configurations is a well managed, focused company," says Gilbert Farina, GM, HPSA Commercial Channel Organisation. "Having earned its reputation as the leader in Intel SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) midrange solutions, it makes sense for the company to commit to one of the largest international brands in keeping with its long-term strategy for continued organic growth and increased market share."

"Computer Configurations has pioneered market acceptance of the SMP Intel platform as an enterprise-strength technology since 1991," says CC marketing director Rob Hulme. "We gained market leadership in eight-way processor technology, and with the impending release of the eight-way NetServer featuring Profusion architecture from Intel`s Corollary division, we will retain this leadership.

"We have a fundamental understanding of mission-critical environments. For the first time NetServer customers can look to their supplier to provide a comprehensive support and maintenance service, and we will apply all our systems engineering and support resources to NetServer. This includes full disaster recovery and 24x7 within two-hour on-site response. These services are augmented by all the other solutions available in the CCH group of companies."

Farina says CC will "provide the best possible value-added solution in support of the NetServer range". "The NetServer`s strength in its architecture and compiler technology will allow it to scale beyond 16- and 32-bit systems. We regard CC as the company best positioned to maximise NetServer`s NT capabilities. In addition they have a rich depth of Unix expertise. We look to them to strengthen NetServer`s market share in the enterprise solutions space."

CC will also leverage off HP`s business partner programme, and will co-operate with solution partners such as Microsoft, Informix, Oracle, SAP and Baan.

Hulme says the company is looking particularly at the financial sector, where the HP brand can gain significant market share. CC will integrate its own range of locally manufactured Orca high-capacity data storage solutions with the HP NetServer as an enterprise offering.

"The NetServer will strengthen our HP offering to our large installed base of HP 9000 clients. Because HP has an uncomplicated and clearly defined distribution model, Computer Configurations feels comfortable committing to a substantial inventory holding, as is our policy. Most of our orders, therefore, will be fulfilled immediately from stock," Hulme concludes.
