Chrysler introduces the first paperless car designs

Following a long-standing relationship with Silicon Graphics, Chrysler Corporation has decided to purchase 500 New OCTANE/SI workstations primarily for computer-aided design applications. Vehicle designs will be done on the new OCTANE/SI workstations using CATIA software from Dassault Systèmes, a Silicon Graphics third-party solution provider.

Chrysler used Silicon Graphics workstations to design its next generation of full-size sedans, which includes the 1998 Chrysler Concorde and Dodge Intrepid, which were the first paperless car designs. Chrysler claims that the Silicon Graphics' workstations have saved them months of design time and allowed them to include more design iterations in their process.

"The designing of the two vehicles is as unique as the vehicles themselves, as they are the first paperless car designs in the industry," says James Chiweshe, MD of Silicon Graphics sub-Saharan Africa. "It is gratifying when a company like Chrysler fully utilises the capabilities of our technology to develop safer and more comfortable vehicles for their customers."
