CA`s eTrust Single Sign-On enables Rex Healthcare to execute radical shift in information technology strategy

Computer Associates International, Inc announced that Rex Healthcare, a private not-for-profit healthcare system that is part of the University of North Carolina Healthcare System, has leveraged CA`s eTrust Single Sign-On (eTrust SSO) to significantly improve patient care and operational efficiency through enhanced access to vital data.

To deliver this improved access, Rex Healthcare replaced its aging system in favour of eight best-of-breed commercial healthcare applications. Forcing users to log into eight different applications, however, would have significantly hampered effective use of the new, state-of-the-art information resources.

By providing a common login across all of these applications, eTrust SSO has streamlined access - ensuring that the company reaps maximum returns on its technology investments, while helping to ensure system security and HIPAA compliance.

The eTrust SSO rollout was performed over a single weekend to all 3 000 users without any disruption to critical services.

"Doctors and other hospital staff don`t have the time or inclination to navigate multiple applications when they`re under tremendous pressure to meet the immediate needs of their patients," said Tom Schnittker, manager of data security at Rex Healthcare.

"With CA`s eTrust Single Sign-On, we have simplified technology use for all of our employees so that our patients consistently get the best possible care and our systems remain fully secured."

Rex Healthcare has also deployed eTrust Antivirus to protect its IT environment against cyber threats. In addition to defending against all known virus attacks, eTrust Antivirus reduces the administrative workload required to ensure across-the-board virus protection.

HIPAA security regulations require certain healthcare providers, insurers, and clearinghouses to establish procedures and mechanisms to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic health information. The regulations are scheduled to take effect in April 2005.

"Rex Healthcare is a prime example of how single sign-on can act as a powerful enabling technology for the business, as well as a high-value, IT security solution," said Bill Mann, vice-president of eTrust security management at CA.

"The success of such a rapid roll-out is proof-positive that eTrust SSO can meet demanding implementation challenges."
