A free-to-air community television service will join DStv's local content channels from tomorrow. Cape Town TV, a non-profit channel licensed to serve the greater Cape Town metropolitan area, can be seen from tomorrow on DStv's channel 263.

It will join other local channels on the MultiChoice platform, such as Tswane TV, Bay TV, Soweto TV and 1KZN. Other local DStv channels on offer include Mzansi Magic, Mzansi Music, Vuzu, Africa Magic and KykNet.

In a statement, Cape Town TV station manager, Karen Thorne, says by joining DStv, the channel has immediate access to more than 20 million viewers in more than 4.5 million DStv households. "Our funding as a community broadcaster is limited, [so] joining the DStv family will enable us to access a larger audience and thus attract more advertising revenue. More funding means more stories from the Mother City."

Cape Town TV was the second community television channel to be awarded a licence after community television was enabled by the Independent Communications Authority of SA in 2004. The channel was founded in 2006, launched on air in September 2008, and can also be watched online.

Some of the flagship programmes on the channel include CTV News, a daily 10-minute news bulletin; Taxi Vision, where Cape Town's well-known comedian Soli Philander and his crew delve into the things that get Capetonians talking; Cape Rugby, an amateur rugby show; and Worker's World, a labour show during which experts discuss issues affecting people in the workplace.

Collins Khumalo, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, says he is proud to add Cape Town TV to DStv's list of local and international television entertainment brands.
