The City of Cape Town has decided to extend the pilot project of its online market until the end of June.
Last month, the city announced it would launch the Cape Town online market to support small businesses to sell their products online in response to the negative impact of COVID-19.
Spearheaded by the city’s Urban Management Directorate, the online market showcases Cape Town-based vendors, with the aim to support small businesses by selling their products online.
While the market was meant to run until Wednesday, 9 June, the city has now extended its run until Wednesday, 30 June.
According to a statement issued by the city, online shoppers could initially look forward to over 500 products from 110 informal traders, vendors and crafters when visiting the pilot Cape Town online market.
However, these figures were exceeded by more than 150 informal traders, vendors and crafters registering more than 600 products, it states.
“Cape Town surprised me with their willingness to take part in this pilot online market and to exceed our expectations with not only the number of vendors registered, but also the quality of the locally-produced products on offer. Because of these successes, we have decided to extend the online market from the initial end date of 9 June to 30 June,” says alderman Grant Twigg, mayoral committee member for Urban Management.
“We continue our commitment to assist the informal sector with increased economic opportunities to minimise the negative economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to find innovative ways of doing business. We call on the public to continue to support these small businesses by browsing and shopping at the Cape Town online market.”
The city specifies that the platform only hosts locally-produced products.
