The tech world is once again eagerly anticipating the latest iteration of the iPad from Apple, and the rumour-mill is working overtime with speculation.
While it has been all but confirmed that the iPad 3 announcement is pegged for 7 March, other reports have emerged of a possible new device, sized somewhere between an iPod Touch and an iPad.
According to analysts, a smaller tablet would help Apple to compete with the likes of Samsung and Amazon. If this is to be believed, then Apple may be looking at using its iPod strategy of releasing multiple devices of different sizes and shapes.
The Wall Street Journal reports that officials from some of Apple's suppliers say they have been shown screen designs for a new device that will have a screen size of about eight inches (some say it will be 7.85 inches). It is, however, noted that Apple may well decide not to continue with the device.
In the meantime, it is widely expected that the iPad 3 will feature the same design as its predecessor, but will have a 2 048x1 536 Retina display, a quad-core Apple A6 system-on-a-chip, and 4G LTE support.
Another possible update to the iPad is rumoured to be the inclusion of better cameras with a five- or eight-megapixel rear-camera and a FaceTime HD front camera. Some have also speculated that Siri Dictation could find its way onto the iPad 3, based on the section called “Privacy and Dictation” found in the iOS 5.1 beta 3 settings.
Speaking at Goldman Sachs' investor conference on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated his commitment to the company and Steve Jobs' legacy: “Apple is this unique company, unique culture that you can't replicate. And I'm not going to witness or prevent the slow undoing of it - because I believe in it so deeply.
“Steve drilled in all of us over many years that the company should revolve around great products and we should stay extremely focused on a few things rather than so many that we did nothing well.”
