BulkSMS.com, a wireless application service provider based in Cape Town, offers MTN and Vodacom users with access to subscription services received via SMS.
"Subscription services provide cellphone users with the benefit of receiving requested mobile content on a daily, weekly or ongoing basis. They do not need to re-confirm their billing once they have agreed to receive a subscription service. Users are billed at regular intervals and receive ongoing mobile content feeds," said Dr Pieter Streicher, managing director of BulkSMS.com, a division of Celerity Systems.
There are several kinds of mobile content offered via subscription services. These are financial information, weather updates, religious messages, motivational messages, tips for weight loss, adult content, horoscopes, daily news feeds and the latest sporting scores. These services are advertised in a similar way to premium-rate SMS and subscribing to the service requires a user to send a keyword (eg, AB123) to a shortcode (eg, 31020).
"In the long run a user of MTN or Vodacom`s network will pay less for mobile content accessed by subscription than making regular requests for content using the usual premium-rate SMS channel," said Streicher.
