BSG's brand expression is 'Unlocking Potential. Accelerating Performance', and its Elite Team is certainly epitomising that in their incredible sporting achievements thus far this year.
The BSG (Africa) Elite Team is leading the pack in multisport and collecting accolades at every event they participate in. They recently took part in the 2011 All African triathlon championships, which was held in July. This event saw a number of elite athletes compete in the first ever championship event, on the Maputo shores of Mozambique. The event is held every year and is a great chance for elite athletes to earn ITU World Ranking points.
The BSG Elite Teams's results were:
* Wian Sullwand: winner of the Junior Men's (16-19) category
* Kate Roberts: winner of the Elite Women's category
* Richard Murray: winner of the Elite Men's category
* Chris Felgate: placed seventh in the Elite Men's category
Congratulations to all the Elite Team members for the great showing at such an important international event. It's been a good year for the team, judging by the results over the past six months.
Richard Murray won first place at the 2011 Brasschaat ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup, which was held in Belgium in May. He recorded the fastest run split (29.54mins) out of a field of 70 athletes, and completed the race in 1hr 44 min. Murray also won races in the Momentum I-flex National Duathlon Series in Zevenwacht and Port Elizabeth. This Duathlon Series race consists of a 5km run / 40km cycle / 2.5km run. The Zevenwacht race took place in April and was completed by Murray in 1hr 45min. The Port Elizabeth race took place in May 2011 and Richard completed this race in an outstanding 1hr 23min, beating his previous time in the Zevenwacht race.
Chris Felgate has had a difficult start to the year, after dealing with various health issues, but aims to improve his performance in the second half of 2011. He finished seventh in the SA Championships earlier this year. Most recently, he participated in the ITU Edmonton World Cup and was placed 51st. Speaking about the event, Felgate says: "This has been the hardest race, in terms of quality of field and scope of event, that I have done since 2008. To compete against 76 of some of the best triathletes in the world is always an amazing experience. It is incredible to see how the level in the world has increased in the last three years!"
Kate Roberts was announced as part of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Gold Group this year. The Gold Group is a select group of male and female triathletes, who are ranked Top 10 in the world, and who receive certain privileges at races, while acting as ambassadors for the sport. Roberts was part of this group until June. She has competed extensively in the ITU Dextro Energy World Championship Series this year already. BSG is supporting Roberts and Felgate on their journey to the 2012 London Olympics.
Wian Sullwald was placed first at the Mini Afriman overall and in the 18-19 age group in the GNT/CGT Duathlon Champs, held in Pretoria North, on 8 May 2011. He also competed in the ITU Junior European Cup in Belgium and finished in second place. Sullwald is proving to be a strong athlete and a new force to be reckoned with.
Sidney Engelbrecht, the BSG Development athlete, kicked off the year with a superb first place in the North West Triathlon Championships in January. He followed this by winning the junior category in the Troisport JHB Duathlon.
Andrea Steyn, Murray and Sullwald all competed for the first time this year in February during the Troisport Johannesburg Duathlon. Steyn won the Open Female category, Murray finished second in the Open Male and Sullwald won the U19 Male category. Steyn also won the Open Female category in the first event of the Momentum I-flex National Duathlon Series, with Felgate finishing sixth in the Open Male category in the same event. Sullwald competed in the sprint race in the Future Life K Swiss and crossed the line in joint first place.
BSG Elite Team members all have these essential attributes:
* The desire to achieve peak performance
* The willingness to work hard and to keep practicing until mastery levels are reached
* The deep appreciation of the importance of team work (they may win individually, however their success is part of a team effort)
BSG has been involved in the sport of triathlon as a key BSG brand platform for the past three years. Training for and competing in a multisport is not unlike running a successful business - in order to excel in these widely diverse fields you need focus, dedication, commitment, hard work and abilities in a variety of disciplines.
