“The digital acceleration gap − the difference between the pace of change we’re all experiencing and an organisation’s ability to keep pace with it − is growing,” says Clare Hickie, regional CIO, EMEA & APJ at Workday.

Speaking during a webinar on the benefits of a true cloud native architecture, Hickie said closing this gap requires companies to break free from the ERP model of the past.

According to Workday’s study ‘Organizational Agility at Scale: The Key to Driving Digital Growth’ which surveyed almost 1 000 business leaders across Asia, Europe, and North America, a third say their organisation’s approach did not enable them to respond to external market shifts.

“For the world we live in today, ERP has really become a failed promise and while porting outdated software to the cloud may reduce costs, it won’t close the gap” she said. “And as pressures grow, like market volatility, data volumes, and digital acceleration, the gap will only get bigger.”

According to Hickie, businesses today need reliable systems that can scale to meet their needs, regardless of how the world or their workforces change. “No matter what, business leaders, workers, and customers depend on a technology foundation that 'just works'. What’s more, as businesses look to accelerate their digital efforts, cloud business continuity at scale is a requirement.”

Hickie said that true cloud solutions, like Workday, need to provide:

  • The peace of mind and ease of planning for IT, with maintenance being planned and predictable, and availability never being in question.
  • Performance SLAs — They matter and customers should require them from any cloud vendor. "We are committed to making industry-leading SLAs (with the first and only performance SLA offered to all customers) even better so that all customers can benefit from our innovations and commitments," she added.
  • The ability to elastically scale as workloads change. IT architectures should detect varying workloads and automatically apply resources.
  • The needs of your business and your technology ecosystem are always changing. Your technology platform needs to do the same, evolving and scaling with and to your business.

“Workday was built in the cloud with a frictionless foundation, a single data model and adaptable architecture, extending across Workday’s spend management, financial management, and human capital management solutions. All of this with enterprise planning and advanced and augmented analytics,” Hickie concluded.
