The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has announced the date and host venue for its next Telecom Americas event, which is due to take place next year.

Salvador da Bahia in Brazil will host the event, which is scheduled for 3 to 6 October next year. With the country being among the recovering economies and improving investment climates, the ITU has decided this will be an ideal venue for the conference.

"Telecom Americas 2005 will be about getting the region`s top names in the ICT sector to meet, network and analyse the trends unfolding in this fast-growing region," says Yoshio Utsumi, secretary-general of the ITU.

"This will be a key event not only to see the technologies and applications that are shaping the region`s ICT sector, but also for examining core policy and investment issues that are central to its growth."

The event is seen as an ideal opportunity for players in the ICT sector who are either already involved in the region, or who wish to break into this lucrative and growing market.

Telecom Americas will comprise an exhibition featuring the latest technologies that will be deployed in the region, as well as a major pan-Americas forum, which should provide a platform to explore growth opportunities and to debate critical policy and development issues.

In other news, the ITU says last month`s Telecom Asia 2004 event, held in Busan, South Korea, was a resounding success.

"The success of Telecom Asia 2004 reflects the leading position that the Asia-Pacific region holds in telecommunications," says Utsumi.

"In many ways Asia is one step ahead of the world. Ongoing product development, cutting-edge technology, and the widespread take up of new products and services has combined to ensure that Asia has a strong competitive-edge."
