Bombardier to efficiently manage component configurations with Maximo

Bombardier Transportation SA, as a member of the Bombela Consortium, has been contracted by the Gauteng Provincial Government of South Africa to provide an 80-kilometre rapid rail transit system to connect Johannesburg, Pretoria and the OR Tambo International Airport, commonly known as the Gautrain. With service to commence in 2010, Bombardier is responsible for designing and supplying the core electrical and mechanical systems. This includes a fleet of 96 ELECTROSTAR vehicles, as well as 15 years of maintenance services.

Bouke Spoelstra, SAM Divisional Manager at Powertech IST Data, says the IBM Maximo Asset Configuration Manager application will assist Bombardier in planning and scheduling maintenance while managing the vehicle configuration throughout its life cycle.

With a sharp focus on safety, reliability and availability of equipment, Bombardier will be able to accurately track the current status of and historical changes to the configuration of assets and their components. As a result, maintenance officers will gain an automated asset life cycle management solution that will provide a real-time calculation of both an asset's build (from install/remove transactions) and a component's life (from install/remove and usage transactions).

With the probability of efficiently managing component configurations throughout each of their asset's life cycle, potential long-term benefits that Bombardier will receive include:

* Improved management and monitoring of regulatory compliance efforts, including improved readiness for both external and internal audits and reviews of maintenance policies, configuration change histories and maintenance records.
* Support for an optimised maintenance program that allows them to more accurately assess, manage and monitor components critical to rail safety and helping to extend component life and reduce the tendency to over-maintain components.
* Reduced record management costs and complexity compared to paper-based or inefficient, semi-automated systems.
* Improved supply chain sourcing, due to an improved ability to verify and manage alternate or replacement parts.
* Reduced inventory, through an improved ability to predict the need for replacement parts, combined with a better ability to identify which parts are obsolete for the current fleet.
