Blow to EU gaming hopes

Judges at Europe's top court have again dealt a blow to the hopes of online gaming companies keen to expand in Europe, by ruling that countries can ban online gaming if this will protect consumers and prevent fraud, states Financial Times.

Ruling in two cases involving efforts by Ladbrokes and Betfair to break into the Dutch market, the European Court of Justice said it's for national courts to decide whether restrictions actually served consumer and fraud protection objectives.

The Ladbrokes case stemmed from objections raised by De Lotto, a non-profit making organisation which holds gaming rights in the Netherlands, which had alleged that the British company was offering online gaming to Dutch citizens without a licence.

Gaming combats post-traumatic stress

A Canadian researcher says she thinks playing video games makes it easier for soldiers to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder by helping them take control of their nightmares, and she has released a study to prove it, reveals Edmonton Journal.

"One of the things that happens when you suffer post-traumatic stress, or you're in a combat zone, is you suffer nightmares," says Jayne Gackenbach, a researcher in the department of psychology at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton.

“What we suggest is that if these guys have been gaming for years ... might it be that they are less likely to suffer the nightmares associated with the traumas of being in combat?" She says her theory is based on decades of research she has conducted on dreams.

Japan gets 3D gaming on PS3

The Japanese will be the first lucky few to experience 3D gaming on Sony's PlayStation 3 when the first wave of 3D content arrives on 10 June, reports The Telegraph.

Wipeout HD, Pain and Super Stardust HD will be the first games to receive the three dimensional treatment. As part of a campaign to promote its Bravia TV range in Japan, Sony will give vouchers to buyers of the televisions, enabling them to download the games for free.

The vouchers will also entitle 3D Bravia owners to an exclusive download of a 3D Motorstorm: Pacific Rift demo.
