Bharti Airtel drives new brand

Bharti Airtel is driving its new Airtel brand across its operations in 16 African countries, reports Vanguard.

Airtel acquired 16 Zain operations in June. As part of the deal, the Zain ZAP mobile money service will be re-branded Airtel Money with immediate effect.

The mobile operator says all of its future products and services will follow the Airtel brand structure. It has also signed agreements to extend its networks to remote areas in Africa.

Nigerian bank tackles fraud

Sterling Bank in Lagos, Nigeria, is collaborating with Clickatell to curb credit card fraud, states All Africa.com.

Sterling Bank and Clickatell have jointly rolled out CardGuard fraud protection service, which incorporates a customer's mobile phone to monitor card activity for fraudulent charges. According to the bank, users can use their mobile phones to freeze their accounts should they note a fraudulent withdrawal.

The bank explains that the partnership emerged following complaints of fraud by electronic payment systems and ATMs.

Ghana addresses mobile health issues

The Danish government has selected the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) to research into mobile health, says Ghana News Agency.

Dr Osei Darkwa, president of GTUC sent an appeal to the government to support the college through the Ghana Education Trust Fund to facilitate the completion of an ICT centre to enable it admit more students.

Darkwa says the advancement of IT has resulted in the massive use of telecommunication devices all over the world and the need for Africa to look into the health problems the technology poses.
