Battle of the worms

E-mail worms top the list of virus threats according to latest top 20 ranking released by Kaspersky Labs.  The leader board for January 2007 shows variants of the NetSky and Bagle e-mail worms in the top five spots.

However, Kaspersky analyst Alexander Gostev says variants of the 'storm worm' virus at sixth and eighth are the most significant newcomers.

Gostev says this is an indication that a third player is joining the battle of the worms for top honours in spammers' arsenal. Towards the end of 2006, Warezov and Bagle were the main contenders.

Gostev predicts this three-way competition will result in an increase in database capturing worms and consequently an increase in spam in the coming months.
