With today`s hard drive sizes growing at the rate they are, backing up can be really costly. Iomega`s REV backup ratio is 35GB:90GB (1:2.6), meaning that 35GB can be backed up without any compression, but if you need to do more, you can compress formats that aren`t already compressed, up to effectively 90GB of data.
This attractive little device will ensure fewer headaches than many other backup options. USB 2.0 support transfer rates make it very quick, which can save hours and days over months of backing up. Moreover, a world of new options becomes available, even to users without much technical knowledge.
Iomega has kept up with technology when producing this gadget, in terms of size (it is approximately the size of a standard PDA) and simplicity. You really don`t need any more than the USB port and power supply. It is not the cheapest, but the purchase is not unwarranted.
It will cost in the region of R3 000, but in my opinion, there is a lot of value for money here. The package contains a REV drive, including all cables, software and drivers, and a 35/90GB disk. Also included is Norton Ghost, a program that allows backup of an entire drive into a single image file, or cloning of operating system and settings to another drive, allowing the user more mobility when dealing with data.
It is a simple install too. For the hardware to work, make sure you have a CD-ROM drive and a USB port, even USB 1.0 (at a much slower speed). Then plug your device into the wall power socket and half the job is done.
From here you will most likely be alerted that a new device has been found and installed (if you`re using XP), or else it will ask you to insert the CD provided and click "next". If it does not automatically install, do so from the CD.
The easy to use graphical user interface allows you to simply select the files/folders you wish to backup and follow the on-screen instructions. This task is really simple and effective. In fact, this device could be compared with the bigger backup solutions that some companies still use today that cost a lot more.
So what are you waiting for? Your drive to crash? A virus to destroy all your sensitive data? Get an Iomega REV drive and rest assured you`ll be covered in the event of an accident.
