Cloud juggernaut Amazon Web Services (AWS) has rolled out its online tech educational programme to South Africa in three of the official languages – English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

Named the AWS Family Tech Series, the programme falls under the AWS InCommunities initiative and aims to ignite local communities’ interest in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM).

Through the programme, participants are invited to explore the latest tech concepts, learn from technology subject matter experts, and learn about cloud computing and career paths in technology, says AWS.

Additionally, they have an opportunity to explore concepts such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, coding and robotics.

The cloud computing giant points out that the series is self-paced and can be explored as many times as possible. “The series aims to bring fun, entertainment and learning opportunities to families, neighbours, colleagues and friends in our communities where we live and work.

“It offers a wide range of exciting content, including tech keynote presentations, workshops and demos, a learning hub with educational videos for all ages and a careers corner.”

AWS highlights that it is designed to offer hands-on workshops that will inspire students to become future builders, educate parents on preparing students for STEAM education and careers, provide a basic understanding of cloud computing and AWS, and create opportunities for future builders who will innovate cloud computing.

Its launch in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa in SA forms part of a global series launch phase, with plans to make it available in nine other languages from 15 July, indicates AWS.

Accordingly, AWS plans to make the tech series available in French, Swedish, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Telugu, Bahasa and Arabic. “As the programme grows and people become part of the series, other languages will be added.”

The complimentary series is open to anyone who is interested and will run until early September, notes AWS, adding that some activities will require an electronic device like a computer or mobile phone with an internet connection.
