Apple had a similar lock screen bypass bug with the release of iOS 4.1.

A security flaw has been found in Apple's new iOS 6.1 software update, whereby the passcode lock screen can be bypassed on an iPhone, offering limited access to the phone app, photos, e-mail, messages and FaceTime.

This isn't the first time Apple has had lock screen bypass bugs, as Apple's release of iOS 4.1 had a similar problem. This was fixed with iOS 4.2.

Earlier this week, Apple released iOS 6.1.1 for iPhone 4S users, to address issues with 3G connectivity. Other consumer complaints around iOS 6.1 have included battery drain, overheating, and some users being cut off from Microsoft Exchange.

The passcode lock bypass method for iOS 6.1 was demonstrated by YouTube user videosdebarraquito. By making and immediately cancelling an emergency call from the passcode lock screen, and holding down the power button twice, he shows how to gain access to the phone app.

Through the phone app, access is granted to the dialler, contact list, voicemails and call history. By editing a contact's photo, all the photos on the phone can be accessed, and e-mail or a text message can also be sent by sharing a contact.

Apple has said it is aware of the issue and is working on a fix that will be deployed in a future software update.
