Tech giant Apple, in its first event of 2021, announced a slew of new products, including an M1 iMac, M1 iPad Pro, a refreshed 4K Apple TV, as well as AirTags.
The $30 AirTag is a small accessory that can be attached to devices to help users keep track of and find the items using Apple’s Find My app.
The company says: “Whether attached to a handbag, keys, backpack, or other items, AirTag taps into the vast, global Find My network and can help locate a lost item, all while keeping location data private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption.”
“We’re excited to bring this incredible new capability to iPhone users with the introduction of AirTag, leveraging the vast Find My network, to help them keep track of and find the important items in their lives,” says Kaiann Drance, Apple vice-president of worldwide iPhone product marketing.
“With its design, unparalleled finding experience, and built-in privacy and security features, AirTag will provide customers with another way to leverage the power of the Apple ecosystem and enhance the versatility of iPhone.”
Once AirTag is set up, it will appear in the new “Items” tab in the Find My app, where users can view the item’s current or last known location on a map.
Apple explains that if a user misplaces their item and it is within Bluetooth range, they can use the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag to help locate it.
Users can also ask Siri to find their item, and AirTag will play a sound if it is nearby.
The iPhone maker also unveiled its new iMac, featuring a much more compact and thin design, enabled by the M1 chip.
The 24-inch iMac is the first iMac to feature Apple’s own custom silicon processor for the Mac. The company says the new iMac offers powerful performance in a design that is 11.5mm thin.
“M1 is a gigantic leap forward for the Mac, and today we’re excited to introduce the all-new iMac, the first Mac designed around the breakthrough M1 chip,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing.
The company also unboxed the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, featuring a new Liquid Retina XDR display. It also unveiled its next-gen TV.
“At the heart of the new Apple TV 4K is the A12 Bionic chip that provides a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding and audio processing,” says Apple.
