Apple reveals news, gaming subscription services

Apple has announced two new subscription services for its users that will provide access to hundreds of original mobile games, or multiple magazine and newspaper titles.

The game subscription service, called Apple Arcade, will launch later this year in more than 150 countries and will be accessible from a new tab on the App Store across iOS, macOS and tvOS.

Pricing for Apple Arcade has not yet been revealed, but at the Apple Special Event that took place in California this week, the company said there would be a monthly fee that gave users access to as many games as they could play.

The offering features over 100 new and exclusive games, including original releases from renowned creators Hironobu Sakaguchi, Ken Wong, Will Wright and more.

The games will be available to play ad-free and have no additional hidden expenses, says Apple. There will also be games available for all ages and cover all genres.

Apple says it has nearly 300 000 free and paid games in its App Store and more than one billion gaming customers. Apple Arcade will allow creators to reach a larger audience as gamers would be able to pay a single fee to have access to many games instead of having to buy each individual game.

"The App Store is the world's biggest and most successful game platform. Now we are going to take games even further with Apple Arcade, the first game subscription service for mobile, desktop and the living room," says Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing.

Some of the new titles gamers can expect form Apple Arcade include "The Pathless" from Annapurna Interactive, "Hot Lava" by Klei Entertainment, "LEGO Brawls" from LEGO, and "Where Cards Fall" from Snowman.

Apple will contribute to the development costs and work closely with creators to bring the games to life.

Hundreds of magazines in your pocket

The other subscription service launching later this year is Apple News+, an app that will give subscribers access to 300 popular magazines, leading newspapers and digital publishers for a single monthly fee.

Apple News+ is already available in the US for $9.99 a month and in Canada for $12.99 a month and will be available in the UK and Australia later this year. It is not known when it will be expanded to further markets.

"We're committed to supporting quality journalism, and with Apple News+, we want to celebrate the great work being done by magazines and news outlets," says Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News.

"We think the breadth and quality of publications within Apple News+ will encourage more people to discover stories and titles they may never have come across before."

Apple News+ subscribers can access current and past issues and individual articles from magazines such as The Atlantic, Better Homes & Gardens, Bon App'etit, Cond'e Nast Traveler, ELLE, Entertainment Weekly, ESPN The Magazine, Esquire, Food & Wine, Good Housekeeping, GQ, Health, InStyle, Martha Stewart Living, National Geographic, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, O, The Oprah Magazine, Parents, People, Real Simple, Rolling Stone, Runner's World, Sports Illustrated, TIME, Travel + Leisure, Vanity Fair, Vogue, WIRED and Woman's Day.

Newspapers include The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Toronto Star, as well as access to premium online publications such as theSkimm, The Highlight, Vulture, The Cut and Grub Street and Extra Crunch.
