Anonymous targets Federal Reserve

The Anonymous hacker group says it plans to target the Federal Reserve, most likely with a distributed denial-of-service attack designed to shut down the agency's Web site, reports Cnet.

In a YouTube video, the group calls for public protests until Federal Reserve board chairman Ben Bernanke steps down.

The campaign, dubbed Operation Empire State Rebellion, is timed to coincide with Flag Day in the US, which is 14 June and commemorates the adoption of the national flag in 1777.

US Senate site hacked

US officials say they have ordered a security review after hackers managed to break into the Senate Web site over the weekend, according to the BBC.

An official said the incident had been “inconvenient”, but had not compromised the security of the staff.

The confirmation came after Lulz Security, a loosely aligned group of hackers, said it had carried out the attack for fun, and posted files online.

Stealthy Android virus discovered

A North Carolina-based academic has discovered a new form of malware prevalent in the Android marketplace, writes Computing.co.uk.

The malware, named Plankton, reportedly evades most detection techniques. It was discovered by Xuxian Jiang, assistant professor, department of computer science, at North Carolina State University.

Jiang gave details of the malware in a security alert posted on the university's Web site. “Plankton is the first malware we are aware of that exploits Dalvik class loading capability to stay undetected and dynamically extend its own functionality,” he wrote.

Huawei unveils MediaPad teaser

Little else was revealed about the MediaPad and no additional hardware specifications or features were given. A Huawei Facebook page said the company will release additional details about the system on 20 June.
