American Power Conversion and HP offer industry`s first dataline surge protector/server bundle

Johannesburg, 13 Aug 1998

Designated the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) vendor of choice for HP NetServer systems, American Power Conversion (APC) has announced that Hewlett-Packard Company is now including an APC ProtectNet Ethernet dataline surge protector (Pnet1) with every new HP NetServer LH 3 system shipped to Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). This is the first time that a server vendor has bundled dataline surge protection to safeguard its customers from dataline surges.

"We recognise that power surges can have devastating effects on a network. In fact, many service calls are associated with these unpredictable power disturbances," said Thierry Boulanger, HP marketing manager, PCs and networking. "By including APC`s dataline protection with all HP NetServer LH 3 systems shipped in EMEA, we can provide our customers with peace of mind that the mission-critical applications housed in their HP NetServer LH 3 systems will not be disrupted by surges that can enter through an Ethernet line."

Unfortunately, datalines are just one point-of-entry for power interruptions. AC and telephone lines also carry potentially serious power anomalies. APC`s ProtectNet family of surge protection solutions protects a number of "carriers," including analogue telephone and modem lines, RS-232 printer and terminal lines, ISDN lines, and a variety of other datalines.

"We are very pleased to continue to expand our relationship with HP, this time to be part of the industry`s first surge protector/server bundle," said Joe Loberti, general manager of APC`s Systems Protection Solutions Division. "By including the APC ProtectNet PNet1 with each EMEA-bound HP NetServer LH 3 system, HP is providing `best-of-breed` dataline protection to each of these customers."

In addition to this dataline surge protector/server bundle, HP has selected APC as its preferred worldwide UPS vendor of choice for both the rack-mount and tower versions of the HP NetServer LH 3 system. APC`s Smart-UPS NS series, a family of rack-optimised UPS products that has the same industrial design as the entire HP NetServer system line, is fully compatible with the HP rack environment. APC`s standard award-winning Smart-UPS line provides high availability to the HP NetServer LH 3 tower system. Both UPSs can be integrated with HP`s server-management tools, such as HP OpenView and HP TopTools.
