ITWeb’s first Business Intelligence ‘datathon’ will take place this weekend in Pretoria, ahead of the Business Intelligence Summit 2020.
The 36-hour hackathon will challenge young coders to develop data-centred solutions as they learn from industry leaders and build their data literacy and analytics skills. The hackathon will teach the coders to economise their solutions, and a coding clinic to see them through the ‘coding blues’ will be setup.
Unearthing fresh talent
#BIDataHack will be hosted in conjunction with Geekulcha, a local tech society, and aims to create a platform for young, skilled and creative tech minds to become active participants in the Internet economy.
“The ITWeb Business Intelligence hack is ultimately about learning, and unearthing data-focused startups,”says Tiyani Nghonyama, Geekulcha’s COO.
“Over 150 local techies, data enthusiasts, analysts and designers have applied to take part. It's free to attend. As this is a learning platform, participants do not need a data science background. Everyone is welcome.”
Entrants from across the country will also attend workshops hosted alongside the hackathon. Led by former Geekulcha hack winners and industry experts, the workshops will cover open data, AI, data representation and machine learning.
IOT projects in the hackathon will be developed with tools from RS Components and SqwidNet, and will receive network support from Sigfox. Nghonyama was recently announced as a Sigfox ambassador.
The event is also supported by the Centre for Public Service Innovation and the UNISA School of Computing.
Participants won’t only have the opportunity to connect with industry insiders and pick-up new skills — a R20 000 grand prize will be presented to the winning team on 4 March, at the ITWeb Business Intelligence Summit in Sandton.
The second and third prize winners will receive R10 000 and R5 000 respectively. Spot prizes will be given away at the hack for the Best IOT Project, Best Female Star and Best Visualisation.
