Forty-four percent of US children between the ages of six and 12 want an iPad for Christmas this year.

This is according to a recent survey conducted by Nielsen, including 3 000 children in the US.

“Consistent with US kids' 2010 wish lists, the Apple iPad is the most desired consumer electronic among kids ages 6-12 for holiday 2011,” says Nielsen, adding that the iPad is up from 31% in 2010.

Apple dominates the top three most-wanted items with the iPod Touch coming in second at 30% followed by the iPhone at 27%.

Twenty-five percent of children said they would like a computer, while another 25% said they wouldn't mind getting a non-iPad tablet.

Nielsen notes: “Given the Nintendo 3DS's spring 2011 release date and the surge in Kinect interest versus last year (up from 14%), parents can expect both devices to be frequently requested this holiday season.

“Beyond these, older Nintendo DS models continue to resonate with young gamers (22%), while the PlayStation 3 (17%) and Xbox 360 (16%) edge out the Nintendo Wii (11%) as the most desired gaming consoles.”

In the age 13 and older market group, demand for the iPad is also up to 24% compared to 18% last year. In 2010, the most desired gadget in this age group was the standard computer, which has now dropped to 18%.

“E-readers (18%) also exhibit heightened appeal among teens and adults compared to last year (15%), while gaming devices on the whole are somewhat less likely to be of interest to the 13+ crowd,” says Nielsen, adding that the only exception is the Xbox 360.

“Parents will clearly have some tough decisions to make as they weigh kids' wants against their holiday budgets,” says Nielsen.
