Alcatel this week released two new devices and a smartwatch to the South African youth market.
The Alcatel Go Play is a 5-inch smartphone with shock, dust and water resistance. This will allow users to take photos on the 8MP front camera underwater. The company claims it can be dropped from 1.5m without damaging the phone.
The Go Play has a live-broadcasting app, ViewMe, which comes standard with the phone. It allows users to record whatever is onscreen, with the option of adding extra images and comments, and then share to pre-embedded apps like Periscope.
The Alcatel Go Watch will be available to purchase with the Go Play. It is Alcatel's version of a smartwatch.
The Go Watch is also water-, dust- and shock-resistant. SMS, e-mails, calls and weather notifications will be sent directly to the wrist when the phone is out of sight. The watch has a gyroscope, a heart rate sensor and an accelerometer built-in. The watch has an average of two- to five-day battery life.
The Alcatel Go Play is available from Vodacom stores, Vodacom 4U, Cellucity, Chatz and the Foschini Group for the recommended retail price of R3 499. Alcatel has not said how much the Go Watch will cost.
Fashion phone
Alcatel also launched a second cellphone yesterday, the Alcatel Pop Star, with two interchangeable "fashion" covers - denim and wood.
It has 3G+ connectivity and runs a quad-core processor. There is 8GB internal memory and 1GB RAM. The 5-inch phone has full dual SIM capabilities. There is an 8MP rear camera and 5MP front camera.
The Alcatel Pop Star is available from Foschini, The Fix, Donna Claire, Markham, Totalsports, Sportscene, Exact, Sterns and American Swiss stores country-wide, at the recommended retail price of R2 299.
