Local smartphone manufacturer AG Mobile today unveiled a range of "affordable" devices in partnership with the Long Walk to Freedom Education Project and MediaTek.
The seven devices, all priced under R2 000, are part of the #Freedom2Learn campaign that supports the project's vision of "easy access to education via technology for all".
Most of the devices will come preloaded with educational material and apps, as well as Nelson Mandela pictures, wallpapers and quotes. Some of the apps will be zero-rated.
The range starts off with the AG Freedom Plus, a feature phone that will sell for R199. There are then two 4-inch devices ? the AG Freedom Access and Freedom E ? which both have basic Internet capabilities and cost R699 each. The Freedom X is a slightly bigger 5-inch smartphone that costs R899. There is also a 3G 7-inch tablet for R899.
The last two devices are LTE-enabled: the 4.5-inch Freedom LTE smartphone for R1 399, and the 10-inch tablet for R1 899.
The #Freedom2Learn campaign will build libraries around the country. The libraries will be containers equipped with learning materials, WiFi connectivity and study facilities.
A percentage of profits made on the sale of all AG Mobile Freedom devices will go to the library project.
Robert Coutts, CEO and spokesperson for the Long Walk to Freedom Education Project, says: "Literacy is the key to all education. We are looking towards the future where technology will play an increasingly important part of our literacy campaign."
The Freedom 4-inch smartphones will be available at Truworths stores nationwide, only on the MTN network. The other devices can be ordered here.
