Africa discusses Internet governance

Representatives from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda gathered in Nairobi to discuss common issues regarding Internet governance in preparation for next month's global Internet Governance Forum, reports Networkworld.

The discussions began with each country identifying its unique issues with a view toward developing a regional position on Internet governance, explained Alice Munyua, co-ordinator of the Kenya ICT Action Network.

"The country networks collected and collated the salient issues, which will be presented to the regional forum. The regional report will be presented to the leaders attending the IGF forum in India as the governance issues concerning the region," she said.

Omatek Ventures, in collaboration with the Lagos state government and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, has unveiled the 'computer for all public servants' initiative under the company's e-Xpress initiative, states AllAfrica.

The initiative aims to provide a flexible computer acquisition and convenient payment plan for public servants in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Omatek MD Florence Seriki said Omatek recognised the need for public servants to become more efficient, effective, innovative and proactive in tackling challenges in the course of their duties.

The Nigerian federal government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee for the hosting of a Microsoft government leaders forum in February, says Punch.

Inaugurating the committee in Abuja, Nigerian minister of information and communications, John Odey, said Nigeria was chosen to host the forum in recognition of it's position as the fastest growing telecoms market in Africa.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and certain African presidents are expected to attend the forum.
