AfriBiz expands on Linux education

Johannesburg, 23 Jan 2003

Considering that most of the servers on the Internet are Linux-based, development of Internet applications with Linux is crucial. Work-seekers should not ignore this fact.

It is also very exciting to see the South African government`s interest in open source software, which also stresses the need for Linux trained personnel even further.

K Le Roux, MD of AfriBiz, says: "We have just rolled out our Linux programming courses. We have added three new courses to our four existing Linux courses. These three courses are all targeted towards programming under Linux. The first course is Linux scripting. The second course is a basic PHP course and thirdly we are starting the Internet specialist programming and administration course. The latter consists of five different modules.

"Like all our courses, these three new courses are not based on sitting and listening to a lecturer but jumping in and getting hands dirty. Looking at the exam results, this seems to be a rather effective way of teaching. We have students that can apply what they have learned. Our motto is: if the students don`t type they are not busy learning!

"We now have an almost completed range of Linux courses. Our aim did not shift from creating an army of Linux trained people to support the growing demand for Linux implemented systems.

"These courses are not intended for new people interested in Linux but for the experienced Linux user. Newcomers to Linux will fair much better by doing the Linux 101 and then Linux 102 courses we offer, before venturing into the programming courses."

Le Roux concludes: "Our strategic move into the Linux training arena opened the door to many exciting projects. In the very near future we will launch open source short training courses like the Open Office course as well as an Open Office course for existing Microsoft Office users. The latter will be a one-day course because of the similarity between Open Office and Microsoft Office. We are also looking into expanding our existing Web site hosting clients by adding value-added software to our three different hosting plans."
