An announcement on the new ADSL pricing regulations, which were finalised this week, will be made on Monday, says the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA).
This assurance was given by ICASA`s senior communications manager, Jubie Matlou.
The councillor overseeing the process, Mamodupi Mohala, has been unavailable for comment, but said on Monday that she had to consult with ICASA chairman Paris Mashile before the results could be made public. Mashile is out of the country.
A source at ICASA has indicated a new ADSL pricing model may be related to the promulgation of the Electronic Communications (EC) Act, the date of which is still uncertain.
Pria Chetty, attorney at Buys, explains that the EC Act and the ICASA Amendment Act are related to the ADSL regulations since they deal with the way in which telecoms services would be regulated.
President Thabo Mbeki signed the ICASA Amendment Act, number three of 2006, on 15 June.
At the public hearings into ADSL pricing in May, many industry players called for a scrapping of the monthly access fee, and it is widely hoped that ICASA will heed these requests, bringing down the cost of Telkom`s ADSL service.
