Acer unveils Christmas gear

Acer unveiled new PC products ahead of the holiday season at a press function in Johannesburg, yesterday.

The new line-up includes the Ferrari One notebook, the Aspire AZ5600 touch-screen all-in-one desktop, and the Aspire 5738D notebook, featuring 3D technology.

The Ferrari One is powered by the second-generation AMD ultrathin platform for notebooks, designed to deliver superior HD entertainment and highly responsive, balanced multi-tasking performance, says John Geypen, business development manager at Acer SA.

“The Ferrari One is for those people who want power and good looks in a small package,” Geypen adds.

The Ferrari One will cost R8 999 and will be in stores before Christmas, according to Acer.

Chris Moseley, retail manager for Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, says the Aspire 5738D notebook is the world's first notebook with real-time 2D to 3D conversion capabilities, which he believes provides a great 3D gaming experience.

Bundled with the notebook is a pair of 3D glasses.

Although the 3D capability is a noteworthy feature, the user has to be directly in front of the screen and angled correctly, or else they won't be able to see the effect and might end up with a headache instead.

Geypen says it must be remembered that this is a new technology, and offered for the first time on a notebook. “The technology will evolve in the future and all these problems will be sorted out,” he states.

The Aspire AZ5600 touch-screen all-in-one desktop is in line with what customers are looking for, according to Moseley, who says recent surveys show desktop sales have increased slightly after falling heavily against notebook sales.

Moseley adds that customers are looking for slim-line PCs that look good and do not cost an arm and a leg, but have the power and functionality to do what is required.
