The world`s third largest PC manufacturer, Acer, has now offers the Linux operating system on its full range of AcerPower commercial PCs and AcerAltos servers - underlining growing industry support for the `alternative` operating system.
According to Brian Bogaard, general manager of Acer Africa, Linux OS has been gaining increasing acceptance in the non-programmer community in recent years thanks to its multi-platform functionality.
"It is widely regarded as a viable contender for the `third` OS position alongside Windows and Macintosh. Linux`s suitability for commercial computing applications has made it a popular choice for SME`s. This is one of the main motivators which prompted Acer to certify its products for the OS," he says.
The Red Hat Linux certification expands platforms available on Acer systems beyond its current certified Windows, NovellNetware and SunSCO Unix.
Certification assures Linux compatibility with Acer Altos servers and AcerPower PCs and allows users to take full advantage of powerful Linux 6.0 symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) support and other new features of this release.
The Acer Altos product line consists of highly manageable servers for high-demand, intensive, information-sharing environments. All Acer Altos servers ship with Advanced Server Manager (ASM) Pro and Remote Diagnostic Manager (RDM) for comprehensive server management by detecting system peripherals and configuring operating systems.
The AcerPower range provides industry-standard commercial computing with high performance Intel PII and III processors and up to 256MB of system memory.
