Absa, SA`s largest retail bank, says its new Facebook profile has met with early success: the bank has 1 200 fans after three weeks on the popular social networking Web site.

"Social networking sites offer opportunities for us to establish new channels of communication with our customers, and better understand their needs," says Absa Digital Channels managing executive Christo Vrey.

Vrey observes that SA "has a surprisingly large Facebook following. Various sources confirm there are about 700 000 members, putting it inside the world`s top 10 countries in terms of Facebook members".

He adds that Absa already has a significant online presence, with 1.25 million individuals visiting its site each month, and nearly one million Internet banking customers, but says there is always room for more interaction.

"More and more companies around the world are embracing social media as a way to develop deeper connections with their customers. We`re excited about the possibilities our Facebook profile will bring," he says.

Absa digital channels spokesman Dave Glazier says the site went live on 8 May and by yesterday had 1 200 fans. "It`s quite successful from our point of view," he notes. "It has exceeded our expectations."
