A ride on the Wild West side

If you enjoy John Wayne and Clint Eastwood cowboy movies and happen to be a gamer, this one`s for you.

After having played numerous "shoot 'em up" games, I was intrigued by a fast-paced Wild West video game, but I soon found that although Gun was fun, it shouldn`t hope to get the popularity that Red Dead Revolver had two years ago.

The game has an interesting story line and centres on gunslinger Colton, a man with a score to settle, but before he does this, there are certain obstacles to overcome.

These include dangerous interactions with corrupt sheriffs, claim jumpers and cattle rustlers - all this while roaming the prairie.

It has an interesting, but very wide gameplay which includes many mini games that go a long way in equipping the character with skills such as bounty hunting, shooting and riding.

However, once these optional mini-games have been played and the story mode is more or less complete, the rest of the game seems bland and pointless.

Other problems with the game, besides the music (reminiscent of a Kevin Costner movie), are the frame rate, which disappoints many a time and the graphics.

On the upside, the developers seemed to put some time into developing and perfecting the action engine, which might surprise a few gamers.

Colton has been given good abilities and is able to do much more than most central characters in the games I played this year and last. Whether it is his ability to use numerous types of weapons or briefly slow time so he can easily gauge targets, the result is quite entertaining.

One thing I did find pointless was the ability to grab any horse and ride into the middle of nowhere...unless of course one is into virtual wide open spaces.

I can guarantee this game will not make many "must have" lists this year, but it does have its moments. I found the game goes everywhere but nowhere, and ends too soon.

My last word on this wild Wild West game: it is better rented that bought. Because I am not a big cowboy fan, I will go easy on its rating and give it a 4.5/10.
