One hundred million business events occur per second each day. What customers need are nuggets of information, at the right time, in the right place. This is what HP calls ROI - return on information.

To help harness the power of big data, HP has unveiled HAVEn, a big data analytics platform that allows organisations of all types and sizes to create next-generation applications and solutions to accelerate the adoption and utilisation of big data.

Called the four 'Vs' by HP - the growing volume, variety, velocity and vulnerability of information presents challenges and opportunities for businesses. Organisations need secure solutions that can scale while sourcing data at high speed.

The new platform is a combination of technologies from HP Autonomy, HP Vertica, HP ArcSight and HP Operations Management, as well as key industry initiatives such as Hadoop, which provides next-generation, big data-enabled analytics applications and solutions.

"The value of big data comes from the ability to analyse all information in real time, so decisions that accelerate growth or improve services to customers and citizens can be made quickly," said Colin Mahony, senior VP and GM: HP Vertica, during a press conference at HP Discover 2013, in Las Vegas.

Mahoney said HAVEn offers many benefits to clients and partners, including avoiding vendor lock-in with open architecture that supports a broad range of analytics tools, including major Hadoop distributions, programming languages, and an ecosystem of business solutions, intelligence, visualisation; and extract, transform and load.

HAVEn also provides a platform for HP's global channel to create big data-enabled business transformation solutions to create new market and revenue opportunities, he concluded.
