Statistics show that more than eight out of ten grade four learners cannot read for basic meaning in their home language. Researchers at the CSIR’s Natural Language Processing Research Group are trying to change this statistic using technology. They are piloting an Android-based application called Ngiyaqonda, in which speech and text technology for South African languages is harnessed to enhance home language literacy.
