Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the new Altiris Workflow Solution and an updated Altiris Helpdesk Solution to help businesses deliver efficient IT service through integrated tools and repeatable, automated processes.
These new Symantec solutions leverage the open Altiris platform to help customers improve IT processes, reduce the cost of management, and ensure IT services are compliant with laws and regulations like Sarbanes Oxley.
Altiris Workflow Solution and Helpdesk Solution take advantage of IT awareness provided through Altiris CMDB Solution.
This integration creates an environment for Symantec endpoint security and management technologies to work together seamlessly, according to unique IT processes and established best practice frameworks like IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
"Symantec is at the forefront of combining human processes, best practices and technologies to help the IT organisation become a critical, strategic partner within the business world," said Greg Butterfield, Symantec group president of the Altiris business unit.
"Symantec solutions help make IT processes repeatable and predictable to improve IT service and the end-user computing experience while reducing costs. Through closed-loop IT service, security and configuration management, we are also helping businesses become confident in meeting their compliance requirements."
Altiris Workflow Solution helps customers co-ordinate human activities and IT processes with Symantec solutions, as well as third-party technologies, through integrated Web services. Altiris Workflow Solution is designed to provide even non-technical workers with the ability to create, change, test and deploy processes through a drag-and-drop forms editor.
Upcoming Symantec management solutions will provide out-of-the-box workflow processes for the most common IT service requests such as new employee and security clearance provisioning and de-provisioning, and self-help service catalogues for software request, password reset, etc.
Altiris Workflow Solution helps make IT data actionable and relevant through integration with the Altiris CMDB and Altiris Task Server. CMDB data and relationships populate the workflow process while Altiris Task Server synchronises automated configuration management tools to deliver IT service, minus unnecessary human intervention. Symantec`s ability to effectuate intelligent IT change through integrated process workflow and configuration management tools is unique among leading CMDB vendors.
Andi Mann, Enterprise Management Associates research director, said: "EMA believes that automating and integrating complex IT management processes is critical to the ability of IT to provide high quality business services. By combining human processes with IT management tools and CMDB data, Altiris Workflow Solution is a significant and positive development in Symantec`s IT management strategy."
Updates to Altiris Helpdesk Solution include integration with Altiris Workflow Solution and Altiris Task Server. Also, a new Helpdesk Solution service catalogue allows IT organisations to publish service options to end-users such as a software delivery process or an IT purchase requisition. Helpdesk Solution now also provides support for Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007, and integration with more secure IMAP e-mail.
Availability: Altiris Workflow Solution from Symantec is expected to be available in beta in November 2007.
