This Mandela Day, learners of the Chris J Botha Secondary School in Bosmont, South of Johannesburg, received a brand new computer lab sponsored by Software AG South Africa. In addition, the top performing computer science student for the year will receive a bursary to further their studies in the ICT field next year. This first-class facility is set to become an important tool in boosting the educational capabilities the school can offer to its students into the future.
The laboratory was opened by school principle, Robert Blend, on the 18th of July, during an event attended by school learners, school and district officials as well as Software AG leadership.
Mohamed Cassoojee, Country Manager and Vice-President of Software AG South Africa, was at the handover ceremony, where he emphasised how privileged Software AG is to partner with the school and provide the tools which not only encourages greater learning but provides an opportunity for future employment.
Apart from the computer lab, Software AG will support the top performing pupil with a tertiary education bursary when they matriculate. This learner will also be offered an internship opportunity with the aim of them becoming a full-time employee within the Software AG network.
"Education is fundamental to the development of our country and it is this understanding that has informed the decision to channel our social development spend to educational initiatives. Software AG is committed to not only providing the tools required for success, but to also nurture young talent up until the point where they are ready to enter the job market," says Cassoojee. "Chris J Botha Secondary School is the third school in this financial year to receive a computer lab from us. We see the building and development of this space as not only crucial for the future prospects of our company, but for that of our nation as well."
This computer lab forms part of an ongoing programme which has seen Sgodiphola Secondary School in Cosmo City and Eersterus Secondary School in Pretoria benefit earlier this year.
Schools are selected based upon stringent criteria and extensive interaction with the relevant stakeholders. The computer labs are managed by the school and the relevant teachers and monitored by Software AG.
"Gone are the days where computer literacy was lacking at our school. The 41 computers will enable our students to take advantage of technology in providing solutions for our future world. The new subject will be offered to our students from tomorrow, and we'd like to thank Software AG in enabling us to build a future with equal opportunities," concludes Blend.
