Frances Zwelinzima was tearful when she was handed the keys to her newly built home, but these were tears of joy. During the third week of August, members of her community in Kathlehong South, her family and 60 volunteers from Volition Consulting Services worked hard together to build a proper home for Frances' nephews and niece.
Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) is a non-profit organisation that aims to provide housing to the underprivileged, with specific focus on building capability in several communities.
Habitat provides housing to economically active people that contribute towards the building and funding of their homes. Volition, South Africa's largest independent supply chain consulting company, has been involved with Habitat since 2004, with project management, procurement and marketing.
By the Friday, the team had achieved a goal of erecting the external and internal walls, windows, roofing and the start of plumbing and electrics. A bible and keys were handed over at a ribbon-cutting ceremony - witnessed by Volition staff, members of Habitat, the community and Nonceba Mnqumeni - the leader of the KAVOSHS project (Kathlehong South/Vosloorus Ext 20 Self Help Housing Scheme).
Said Nonceba at the ceremony: "Thank you to Volition for their financial commitment and to the volunteers. Volition's staff showed great commitment, passion and energy."
Cobus Rossouw, MD of Volition, added: "Volition is proud to be associated with Habitat - not only because we assist in making a real difference to people's lives, but also because our employees are exposed to aspects of South African life which they are normally removed from - making them better people."
The homeowners' mother had been very involved with KAVOSHS, but unfortunately died recently. It is therefore fitting that her children are recipients of this wonderful home, as a reward for their mother's hard work in assisting others in her community to receive homes.
