Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ NM: BORL), the leader in software delivery optimisation, today announced that Verizon Wireless has begun implementing Borland`s Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solutions to increase control over its software development processes and improve efficiencies across its development team.
According to Verizon Wireless, Borland`s ALM solutions and services have enabled the wireless carrier`s Web site development team to reduce business risks, more easily adapt to change, contribute more value to the business and better serve the wireless provider`s more than 47 million customers.
"Borland`s products and our processes provide the tools and structure my team needs to do their job, so that I can focus on strategy instead of the block-and-tackle activities that can often take so much time," said Nate Otiker, director of IT-Internet services at Verizon Wireless.
"Knowing that my entire team has the tools they need, allows me and my senior managers to work on the more strategic projects that will help Verizon Wireless excel in this extremely competitive environment." With hundreds of new projects to manage a year, Verizon Wireless needed a scalable ALM solution that would automate daily tasks, provide instant visibility into the status and history of projects, and enforce the necessary rules and procedures for application development. The latter was especially important to maintain superior software quality and to comply with high service level agreements (SLAs). The deployed solution consists of Borland StarTeam for software configuration and change management and Borland Together for visual modelling. The Web site team is also in the process of rolling out Borland JBuilder for Java software development and Borland CaliberRMTM for requirements management.
Mitigating risk and managing change
The combination of Borland`s solutions and the guidelines and best practices that the Verizon Wireless Web site team has put in place has created a solid foundation for operational excellence and repeatable and efficient development processes. "Not only have our SLAs improved, but with the support of these tools, my senior team and I can apply our efforts more to serving our customers with new services," continued Otiker.
Another important element of the company`s ability to manage risk is having the tools and processes in place to anticipate and respond to the numerous changes that occur in the day-to-day development cycle.
Otiker continued: "Borland`s solutions, together with the processes and regiment that my team has in place, allow us to predict and plan for change. They also allow us to better understand the impact that requested changes may have on existing applications. Having this visibility is extremely important when you have 51 000 employees, a large volume of change requests, and when you know how much one minute of downtime can cost the company."
