Bolt, formerly known as Taxify, has officially introduced its own food delivery service, Bolt Food, in its native country Estonia, with plans to roll out in Latvia, Lithuania and South Africa later this year.
The move comes after Bolt announced plans earlier this year to add food delivery to its list of services, along with ride-hailing and scooter-sharing.
In a statement, Bolt says its food delivery app allows customers to order their favourite foods from their most-loved restaurants, direct to their door and super-fast.
Explaining the move into food delivery, Bolt indicates this was a logical step. “Honestly, our ride-hailing/ride-sharing business has over 25 million happy customers, in more than 30 countries throughout Europe and Africa. Food delivery has been a really popular request from a load of them.”
According to the e-hailing transport service, the app will feature some of the most popular restaurants in Estonia’s capital city Tallinn, with plans to add more over the coming weeks.
In March, Bolt underwent a global rebrand, introducing a new logo and changing its name from Taxify, in a move aimed at bringing its brand identity in line with the company's global vision of transportation, it explained at the time.
Bolt was founded by Markus Villig in 2013, when he was 19 years old, and launched locally in April 2016.
It operates in 13 cities and towns across the five provinces in SA and says it has created employment opportunities for over 10 000 driver partners locally and 500 000 drivers globally.
