Start-up direct response company Tevo is successfully challenging an industry which has been set in its ways for 15 years with its innovative product ideas and efficient use of technology. Based in Durban, South Africa, Tevo is taking the local telemark industry by storm.
Directors Patrick Bennett and Robin Read identified a gap in the market which inspired them to launch Tevo 12 months ago. "There was a clear need for innovative and well-priced, quality products," says Read. "Our aim is simple - for our clients to be delighted with the value they receive for their money."
The first six months were spent finding the right IT, warehouse, call centre and retail partners and, of course, the sole distribution rights to a range of innovative products from top-quality manufacturers. Only then did Tevo start trading, conducting most of its business through a hi-tech call centre and major retail stores.
"We wanted to differentiate ourselves as a supplier through our innovative, quality products and our effective systems. We needed to keep our headcount low while still performing as a significant supplier to large retail chains, so the right ERP system was critical. We conducted a thorough market evaluation before selecting SYSPRO," Read says.
There were a number of factors contributing to Tevo's decision to implement SYSPRO. "SYSPRO was ahead of the game in terms of technology, and in the long term it's more cost-effective.
"Another large overriding factor was the excellent implementation, support and service provided to us by EOH Consulting Services KZN from day one. Always honest about what could and couldn't be done, this VAR deserves the highest praise," Read says.
The implementation was completed at the end of September 2004, and Tevo is already enjoying extensive benefits, including the ability to handle dramatic growth in its business without increasing staff.
Tevo's next step is to facilitate integration between its systems and those of its customers.
"SYSPRO has played an integral role in our achievements to date, and I believe it will continue to do so as we launch more products in our quest to be a major player in the South African telemark industry," he says.
