Medihelp, one of South Africa's largest medical schemes, has ensured uninterruptible power supply to its information technology department and call centre by contracting Square One Power Solutions, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, to install and commission a 160kW UPS and diesel generator at its head office in Pretoria.
The UPS solution is based upon a 160kW APC Silcon unit linked to a 250kVA diesel generator set with both units housed on the parking level of the building. This arrangement ensures the critical electrical loads to Medihelp's information technology and call centres are fully maintained should there be a mains power failure or severe voltage variances in the form of sags or spikes.
Square One Power Solutions national sales manager, Neil Burnard, said the system design ensures that when mains power fails, the UPS sustains the load required from its battery packs. The generator set starts automatically and then supplies load through the UPS until such time as the mains power supply is reinstated.
Burnard added that Silcon UPS units are extremely efficient with very high input power factors and low input distortion, which minimise running costs. "Delta conversion online technology is also used which realises bottom line benefits for users through reduced installation, wiring, air conditioning, harmonic distortion and maintenance costs as well as lower energy consumption."
