Spescom has supplied a recording solution to Transtel for deployment at the National Ports Authority (NPA).
Transtel is the telecommunications provider of the Transnet group.
Spescom DataVoice, the voice transaction management operation of multinational Spescom group, has provided Orion Professional Voice Recorders for six commercial ports.
According to Captain Karl Otto, NPA's deputy harbour master, Cape Town, a high quality, reliable solution was required.
"It is essential that the two-way radio communications between vessels and the NPA Port Control Tower, as well as all Port Control telephone calls, are recorded. Voice recording is vital in terms of liability issues and security.
"In the event of an incident or query, all communications relating to the event can be extracted and analysed to resolve any dispute."
Otto adds that SA is fully compliant with the International Ships and Port Security (ISPS) code.
"By complying with global safety regulations and requirements we can attract more international business. The ability to safely record all communication that is date stamped and verifiable adds value to our services."
According to Spescom DataVoice commercial director, Andrew Condon, the Orion Professional replaces the DOS-based Spescom Classic Recorder that was in operation throughout the NPA since 1992.
"The Orion Professional recorder is a full-featured digital recording system that meets all customer recording requirements in a single cost-effective solution. With regards to the needs of the NPA, the interface was configured to accommodate both telephone and two-way radio recordings.
"This is a scalable solution that can be upgraded in accordance with changing business needs and demands."
Condon notes that in addition to being vital in the everyday operations of the NPA, recordings can also be used as training tools.
