South African project software used in India

Tata Steel, part of India`s largest industrial empire, based in eastern India, has implemented South African-developed PSRemote to help manage its high production volumes.

The job-shop division of Tata Steel, TGS, is managing over 400 heavy engineering jobs on a daily basis. In order to dramatically increase efficiency and manage this huge workload, TGS has started using the Critical Chain methodology supported by PSRemote.

"We have been able to automate the TGS data collection and reporting systems using PSRemote," says Francois Retief, MD of Management Planning Systems.

"During the day, various managers capture the status of their tasks via the intranet. Precisely at midnight, PSRemote kicks-off, gathers all this data and distributes a new set of tasks for the following day.

"The data is analysed using a sophisticated Critical Chain analysis tool developed by MPS. When managers walk into their offices the following morning, they are able to view a prioritised set of tasks as well as a full set of tabular and graphic reports across all projects - all up-to-date and Web-based."

According to Retief, there is no other product like PSRemote. "It is aimed at companies that need to collect data from many of people on a regular basis, painlessly. For example, when people are involved in projects, PSRemote is used to easily collect project information on a regular basis over the Web or offline via e-mail."

Conventional project management systems have very limited flexibility with regards to the type of data that can be collected. "With PSRemote one is able to regularly collect any data from anyone at any frequency from any location. Using the unique offline updating facilities of PSRemote, bandwidth and security are no longer issues. PSRemote includes customisable validation at the source, zero or more levels of approval and full automatic notification."

Sasol Technology in SA is using PSRemote to regularly collect data from a large number of resources working across the globe on hundreds of projects worth tens of billions of rand. The data that is being collected include monetary values, percent progress, quantities, lookup table values, comments, etc. Managers receive instant feedback via traffic lights and text messages if their values are out of range.
