In a significant third-party independent endorsement, the Gartner Group has put Siemens in the 'leader' category of its 'Magic Quadrant' ranking tool that categorises vendors as leaders, visionaries, challengers or niche players.
"Siemens has a significant position in the soft switch architecture market. Its recent consolidation of its Carrier Networks and Mobile Infrastructure business units underscores the company's strategic alignment towards the IMS switching topology," says the Gartner Group's explanatory statement.
Fernando Goncalves of Siemens Communications says that with the third party application program 'we SURPASS', Siemens emphasises its commitment to open interfaces for revenue-generating services, including IP Centrex and multimedia.
"The 'We-care' service and support program encompasses all stages of outsourcing of network operations, where Siemens holds a high reputation for carrier switching capabilities and deep understanding of carrier requirements and business concepts," he says. "The soft switch architecture market, composed of soft switch/call control and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, has gone through some iterations of industry hype, from an initial 'packet will replace all legacy infrastructure' to a now more moderate network migration and packet overlay approach. Many vendors following the cycle have vanished or were acquired, and some have been able to build out their portfolio to have product solutions for green field Internet Protocol (IP) deployments as well as for network evolution."
Goncalves says that 'we SURPASS' is a partner program that enables third-party vendors to develop cutting-edge IP applications for carriers, Internet Service Providers and Application Service Providers on the basis of the SURPASS architecture.
"IP Centrex is a form of outsourcing in which a carrier offers its customers user services via a switch. The enterprise customers thus have no telephony infrastructure of their own; all the services that are offered are provided by the carrier," he continues.
