SA Tourism, the organisation tasked with driving the growth of tourism in South Africa, has implemented Attix5`s Backup Professional networked disk-to-disk backup solution to ensure the continuous availability and safety of its data.
According to Tim Brophy, Web Developer: eBusiness at SA Tourism, business continuity has been identified as a priority at the organisation, which, until fairly recently used to backup to a single location on tape.
"The majority of data held at SA Tourism is made up of general usage documents such as Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and, of course, our financial data. We also maintain a number of consumer databases, vital to the continued development of our portal.
"Prior to the implementation of Attix5 Backup Professional, we had no offsite data storage, or rapid restoration or disaster recovery capabilities," he says.
The IT environment at SA Tourism is based on Dell infrastructure, running Windows Server 2000 with Oracle E-business Suite deployed for the financials.
Backup Professional is an automated server suite, which backs up data to a secure offsite location on a daily basis. Once an initial full backup has been performed, the server process only backs up the daily changes, cutting down on bandwidth while still preserving the entire state of a server.
Adds Jan Sipsma, account manager charged with key customer development at Attix5: "In the event of data loss due to a systems crash, failure, theft, virus damage, accidental deletion or disaster (eg, fire, flood), files can be quickly and easily recovered to any computer at any location, enabling the smooth continuation of business operations."
Says Brophy: "We adopted Attix5 Backup Professional on the recommendation of our technology partner and subsequent investigations have failed to unearth any comparative software that so completely meets our needs. We are currently looking at upping our package to around 350GB, which will cater for our predicted future growth.
"The service from Attix5 has been excellent and the fact that it`s local technology makes it the ideal solution for an organisation like SA Tourism," he concludes.
The key benefits of Attix5 Backup include:
*The service is disk-based and as such avoids the substantial ongoing costs of tape replacement associated with legacy solutions.
*It is delivered as a fully managed service, meaning customers benefit from a guaranteed service level availability.
*The solution`s remote site management capability removes the need (and cost) for onsite support and maintenance.
*Restoration of data (mean time to restore) is significantly quicker than tape-based backup solutions as the data resides in an online environment, enabling the restore to happen immediately (and remotely) instead of having wait for the correct tapes to be physically located and loaded.
*The service is based on a pay-as-you-go model and requires no upfront capital investment in hardware or software.
*The solution can be seamlessly extended to cover desktops and laptops.
