Palm Treo 500v debuts

Vodafone and Palm have collaborated to launch a smartphone modelled after the Treo 750v, but at a fraction of the price and with a newly-designed user interface, reports PC World

Vodafone will, for three months, exclusively sell the Palm Treo 500v, which debuts in Europe in October. The handset will then be available to other operators and retail outlets, in Europe and Asia.

The pricing of the 500v will vary according to the market. The handset will be available free or for a small fee, together with a 12- to 18-month contract in the UK.

Guitar Hero III coming to PC, Mac

Aspyr Media and Activision have announced that Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will be released for both PC and Mac, reports GameDaily.

Aspyr, best known for bringing games like Call of Duty 2 and The Sims 2 to the Mac, along with the original Stubbs the Zombie, is handing the development for both games.

Both versions will feature multiplayer battle mode, finger-numbing boss battles and unlockable content. Packed with over 70 tunes, players will also access an expanded online multiplayer mode across either platform.

Barcelona chip gets speed boost

AMD has released the Barcelona server processor, and has said it will have a faster version of the quad-core Opteron device out by the end of the year, reports PC World

At the Barcelona launch event, Randy Allen, VP and GM of AMD's server and workstation division, said the initial top clock speed on the quad-core chip is 2GHz.

The company will have a 2.5GHz version ready for shipment in December.

Microsoft, Sun team up

Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have revealed that under a new agreement, channel partners and customers will be able to order Sun x86 servers pre-installed with Microsoft Windows Server 2003, reports CRN

The companies will collaborate to make sure their virtualisation technologies are interoperable.

The agreement comes after seven consecutive quarters of x86 server sales by Sun, said John Fowler, executive VP for Sun.
