Nelson Mandela Foundation, Backup Storage Facilities conclude agreement

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has concluded an agreement with Backup Storage Facilities (BSF) for the off-site storage of all its tapes and electronic media. This agreement will safeguard the volumes of data relating to the foundation, that cannot be lost.

Says Chief Operating Officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Tim Scholtz: "Off-site tape storage is a basic principle of any good business continuity plan and it was a minimum standard for me when I joined the NMF. I had previously made use of BSF`s services at my preceding company and instituted the same procedures here of daily tape collection and storage away from our premises."

The Nelson Mandela Foundation was established in 1999 as the primary vehicle for Nelson Mandela`s continued pursuit of the ideals and goals he set while serving as SA`s first democratically elected leader from 1994 - 1999. The foundation follows the establishment of the Nelson Mandela Children`s Fund in 1995 which has as its purpose to nurture, motivate and care for the future of children and youth. As such, the work that the foundation does affects the lives of many South Africans in need, making good corporate governance a fundamental precept to its survival.

Believing in the ethos of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and fully understanding the risk in the event of a disaster, BSF has shown its support by extending very preferential rates to the foundation, making it easier for it to address its responsibility to donors and trustees to ensure failsafe information security and disaster prevention.

States Annetta Holmes, CEO of BSF: "We`ve been in the business of off-site tape storage for decades now and understand that the more data you create, the more you depend upon it. Our partnership with the NMF has highlighted their understanding that off-site tape storage is a `first step` in data security and good archival processes. As part of our corporate social investment, the reduction in fees can be seen as a vote of confidence in the ideals that Mr Mandela put in place and the importance of these ideals thriving long after his retirement from public life."
