Communications and digital technologies minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has scheduled an urgent meeting with Telkom, to be fully briefed on reported plans that the company is set to trim its workforce.
Further communication will be made in due course, says the minister’s office in a statement.
The statement reads: “The minister of communications and digital technologies, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, has noted with concern the latest reports on the planned Telkom retrenchments.”
Telkom is majority-owned by government, with the state holding a 39% stake in the telco. In her capacity as communications minister, Ndabeni-Abrahams acts as the shareholder.
This week, news broke that the telecoms giant is looking to cut up to 3 000 jobs.
The affected jobs include support employees, specialist and operational employees, and supervisory and management levels in its wholesale division Openserve, the consumer unit as well as in its corporate centre, Reuters reported.
